Winter 2024 Update from ATO Magazine

 Greetings from ATO Magazine,

Just a quick update on our latest release plus an exciting challenge further below!

What’s Out the Door

Now mailing is ATO issue #61 with ROME IInc inside. The subscription copies have been turned into the mailing service and we’ll start sending out non-subscriber copies next week, domestics first, followed by international orders.

A sequel to the award winning ROME INC, designer Philip Jelley explores running the later Roman Empire like a business, but this time the barbarians are well and truly at the gates. Together the players operate behind the scenes, promoting and removing emperors, governors, and the occasional pope.

You decide where to allocate resources (capital spending), raise new forces (hiring), undertake prestige projects (public relations), pleasing the church (shareholders), or even setting aside a reserve for a rainy decade or two. You need to blend military acumen with careful administration, as well as intrigue, making the most of what you have each turn, just like any modern-day business. ROME, IInc. will give you a new perception of how war is a cost, business is a benefit, and empire is somewhere in between. It’s up to you to find a balance. Download the rules (look to the lower right) and order this issue from the game's webpage here.

Up Next

Now open for pre-orders and appearing in ATO #62 will be Strike of the Heron - The Approach to Stalingrad which explores the sudden, astonishing, breakthrough operation “Fischreiher” (Heron) by the German XIV Panzer Korps and other supporting units, to the Volga River in August, 1942. A long thin corridor had been driven deep into Soviet lines. Could it be held?

Stalingrad became isolated from the north as the result of this bold thrust and the Soviets frantically counterattacked the narrow corridor from both sides. During game play, the Soviet player must not only ensure sufficient forces escape the intended German encirclement, but then maintain constant pressure on the overextended Panzer Korps with a series of counterattacks from both north and south of the corridor. You can learn more about this critical battle by clicking this link.

Just 48 Hours to Go and the Challenge!

Our Kickstarter campaign for La Bataille de Kulm inside the 2023 Annual is now inside 48 hours to close. We’ve had amazing participation from all of you, our amazing readership. We’re down to our last 2 Support Goals:

1.) Gold ink on the counters for the elite formation troops at Kulm.

2.) A second mini-game included in the issue looking at the 1814 Campaign in Eastern France!

Your pledge can help push us over the monetary thresholds to achieve these last two but you must act soon – in two days the campaign will end.

Learn more about these two remaining Support Goals by clicking this link.

Click on the image above to visit our Kickstarter page for Kulm.

Besides outright support for this project via pledges, you can also help, of course, by spreading the word anywhere you see gamers or Napoleonic enthusiasts.  Kulm rules will be structured for "easy entry" to the La Batt system (like our La Bataille de Vauchamps was) and this means it's a chance to "grow the market" and attract new players to the whole La Bataille System.  That is a win-win for everyone!

And About Subscriptions

Note that ATO is still selling subscriptions to US residents (only) but that the new/renewal subscription webpages on the ATO site have been turned off. Basically, just send us an e-mail to
sales@atomagazine.com saying you’re interested and want the last 4 issues (#62 - #65) as a subscription for $125.00. We control things this way so no one can go over the bingo expiration issue of #65. We'll check out if you'd go over the limit, and then use PayPal to send you a (secure) request for money, and you can use your own PayPal account to pay for it (PayPal will also allow you to use a credit card now, even if you don't have a formal PayPal account).

Happy Holidays to All!
