Autumn 2024 ATO Magazine News - No Tricks But a Few TreatsGreetings,

Our newest Annual with Stalingrad: Verdun on the Volga inside has begun being shipped with copies to domestic readers wrapping up this week and with foreign readers starting up next week. Watch for little e-mails from the post office as the issue makes it way towards you. The early buzz on this issue seems good so if you think you now want one, check it out here. ![]() A Guest Treat
At a time when reading books (even great history!) is in decline, I just wanted to call your attention to a remarkable firm that’s using the latest in technology to change the way the game is played by offering audio books. To really delve into military history, audio books are a great complement to classical media. Publisher Major Intonio, a provider specializing in the field, is now offering a free download of their new audio book release “Great Captains” that you can access here at https://ko-fi.com/s/260acacea9.
Author Theodore A. Dodge features portraits of the six leaders who contributed most to the development of modern warfare: Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar, Gustavus Adolphus, Frederick and Napoleon. This is the story of their military education, their personalities, their greatest campaigns and most dramatic battles, their impact on history and the lessons they left for posterity.
Major Intonio has graciously made the above title a free download for all ATO/TPS enthusiasts from now through October 31st although you can still donate something to them if you liked it. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this free audio book sample and then check out their other fine offerings.
That Special Announcement
We Are Celebrating Our 100th Published Major Release!
And giving you a great "party favor" with any order!
Yes, I was pleased to recently discover the combined efforts of both our major brands, Against the Odds Magazine and Turning Point Simulations, add up to hitting the "100th Published Major Release" milestone. I want to celebrate with ANOTHER new game!
For the month of October, or while supplies last, you'll score a FREE copy of our new Britskrieg! game WITH ANY ORDER. No codes. No special passwords. No hoops to jump through.
![]() Britskrieg! is a sweet little game from Lembit Tohver, looking at Operation Brevity, a North African battle that happened May 15-16, 1941. "Brevity" was really designed to set things up for the much-better-remembered Operation Battleaxe that took place a month later. Britskrieg! comes with an 8.5" x 11" map, 54 mounted and die-cut 9/16" counters, and just two pages of rules (plus 2 more pages with optional rules, historical commentary, and notes). Small, but the game still factors in the gaps between tank and anti-tank abilities and the organizational approach to war between the two sides, plus the different AFV types (tankers love that!). The game well models the British Art of War at that time. Fast to get into, clean, with plenty of options for replay.
Literally BUY ANYTHING off the website and we will add a copy of Britskrieg! to your package at no extra charge. However, your order has to be for something we can actually send you now (subscriptions and pre-orders for future releases won't count) and of course, all previous sales are excluded as well. Click here or on the image above to learn more. And Of Course What's New
Up next is ATO issue #61 with ROME IInc inside. A sequal to the award winning ROME INC, designer Philip Jelley explores running the later Roman Empire like a business, but this time the barbarians are well and truly at the gates. Together the players operate behind the scenes, promoting and removing emperors, governors, and the occasional pope.
Both a solitarie and dual player game, together or alone, you control the mechanics of a failing empire, choosing five distinct “starting points” (286 CE, 363 CE, 425 CE, 497 CE and 565 CE) and run scenarios lasting 10-50 turns, depending on your corporate acumen and endurance. Each turn represents 5-10 years, with 10 turns in each of the five scenarios. If you already own ROME, Inc. you can extend the game into ROME, IInc. for a truly epic 90 turn game charting the rise and fall of history’s greatest empire.
![]() You decide where to allocate resources (capital spending), raise new forces (hiring), undertake prestige projects (public relations), pleasing the church (shareholders), or even setting aside a reserve for a rainy decade or two. You need to blend military acumen with careful administration, as well as intrigue, making the most of what you have each turn, just like any modern-day business. ROME, IInc. will give you a new perception of how war is a cost, business is a benefit, and empire is somewhere in between. It’s up to you to find a balance. Pre-order this issue here.
About Subscriptions
Note that ATO is still selling subscriptions but that the new/renewal subscription webpages on the ATO site have been turned off. Basically, just send us an e-mail to sales@atomagazine.com saying you’re interested and want a 4 issue ($125.00) or 5 issue ($150.00) sub. I control things this way so no one can go over the bingo expiration issue of #65. I'll check out if you'd go over the limit, and then use PayPal to send you a (secure) request for money, and you can use your own PayPal account to pay for it (PayPal will also allow you to use a credit card now, even if you don't have a formal PayPal account).
OK, enough for now. Thanks for reading!
