High Summer 2024 News from ATO!Greetings from ATO Magazine There’s been a bit of a gap since our last newsgram. Best to dive right in with all the happenings around here! What’s Old News All copies of ATO #60 with Cities of the Damned inside are in the mail. We’ve had reports the issue has reached all states adjacent to Pennsylvania here, so they are rippling outwards. If you don’t get your copy by August 24, send an e-mail into admin@atomagazine.com and we’ll investigate. This release is also now available as a back issue that you can pick up on our website here. Two complete solo games in this issue! Missed some issues you say? We have found that some folks sort of don't notice that their subscription has ended until they realize they have missed several issues. What’s New Up next from ATO is our Annual featuring Stalingrad: Verdun on the Volga. Was it the single bloodiest battle in history? It was most certainly the strategically decisive battle of WW2. After Stalingrad, it was only a matter of time for Hitler's Germany. But if the Wehrmacht had won there, who can say what the outcome might have been? With a setup time of less than 15 minutes, but a large, double map-board, players will have plenty of chances to try new approaches and come back for more. The original three very different scenario situations gave players the option to go for a game that might be complete in 3-4 hours or one that will probably take 8 hours, although there are VP checks along the way that could shorten things suddenly. Check out the game’s doubled-side Summer/Winter maps - a first for ATO! The game is "friendly to novices" in getting started, but offers grognards all the challenges they desire, with the focus on managing options and tactical swings of fortune, versus plowing through a big rulebook. Each turn forces players to interact and modify plans, as they balance the advantages of careful set-up versus a turn that can suddenly end, leaving the attack either not-made or hanging. Lots of tension and play balance is excellent. Both sides can win and win with excitement. The game is surprisingly interesting solitaire as well. This is a game on the Late Roman Empire (the period from Diocletian to Heraclius) for one player, or two co-operating players. A sequel to the popular ROME, Inc. you again will be running the Roman Empire like a business, but this time the barbarians are well and truly at the gates. Together the players operate behind the scenes, promoting and removing emperors, governors, and the occasional pope. When corporate axeman Diocletian terminated his predecessor in the finest traditions of ROME, Inc., no one expected a complete rebranding operation. Realizing that something new was needed to revive the flagging fortunes of a corporate dinosaur he made his friend Maximinus co-CEO in a new east-west operation, ROME, IInc. Players can accept the challenge solo, or share control of the empire with a partner, one in the East, and the other in the West. You decide where to allocate resources (capital spending), raise new forces (hiring), undertake prestige projects (public relations), pleasing the church (shareholders), or even setting aside a reserve for a rainy decade or two. You need to blend military acumen with careful administration, as well as intrigue, making the most of what you have each turn, just like any modern-day business. ROME, IInc. will give you a new perception of how war is a cost, business is a benefit, and empire is somewhere in between. It’s up to you to find a balance. Learn more and pre-order ROME, IInc here!
