Throughout most of its history, America has gone to war with enthusiasm and expectations of a quick victory. It has not always worked that way. In the end, massive resources have -- usually -- tipped the balance toward America's goals...but even that has sometimes had mixed results. (See "War with Spain -- Philippine Insurrection.")
Welcome to the American Way of War, an historical mixture of misplaced efforts, and massive resources to redeem them.
Now, here is your chance to pick up award-winning titles at a bargain price - but that's "The American Way of doing business."
A Dark and Bloody Ground
A Dark and Bloody Ground presents the little-known five-year struggle that the brand new United States waged on its western border, against Native Americans and recalcitrant British supporters. St. Clair's initial expedition to punish the Natve Americans met disaster at Wabash, Ohio. Stung by the defeat, the young US Government mobilized to conquer the then "Northwest Territories" in a bloody campaign most famous, perhaps, for its atrocities....

Birth of a Legend
The Seven Days Campaign, fought from June 26th to July 2nd, 1862, represented the Union's finest chance to put an early end to the great rebellion, and the Confederacy's best shot at "bagging" an entire Union Army. Aggressive and imaginative by nature, the new Confederate commander, Robert E. Lee summoned virtually every spare unit the South could muster for that rarest of Southern advantages, numerical superiority.

Islands of the Damned
Inside Against the Odds Magazine issue #43 are two separate solitaire games in a package called Islands of the Damned. Discover how America fought when under attack, and on the attack.
Any study of the early weeks of WW2 in the Pacific is certain to notice the campaign for Wake Island, referred to in those dark days as “the Alamo of the Pacific.” Though the “Send more Japs” radio line was never actually sent by those on the island (it turned out to be a radio code deception), the spirit of their defense heartened a nation shocked over their losses at Pearl Harbor and bracing for invasion.
As a contrast, few studies of WW2 in the Pacific will even mention the Battle of Peleliu, an island of marginal value, which might not have been attacked at all, except those in charge expected it to be so easy. But due to Japan's well-crafted fortifications and stiff resistance, the battle lasted over two months, and has the highest US casualty rate for any battle in the entire Pacific war. (You’ve heard of Tarawa and Saipan and Okinawa...and this was worse?)
